PSA REGARDING MOVESETS
written by Austin and David... but mostly Austin because David sucks

It wasn't long ago when the administration team decided to let the creativity run wild. We decided to let people run wild with their movesets and make characters into their own. It has honestly been a brilliant thing for the most part. It has let people expand their movesets in ways that they couldn't before. Some of us haven't taken many advantages of it. Most of us have taken advantage of it... but some of us have taken the idea of creative freedom too far. We are entering a new game where there will be a lot of new moves and a lot of moves that have been reanimated so we wanted to put this out in the open before people go wild with their movesets and change them to their liking. Let's make one thing clear:

CREATIVE FREEDOM ≠ ADDING WHATEVER MOVE YOU WANT

Creative Freedom is being able to make a character into more of your creation while still keeping the core values of the character that you are playing. You are allowed to give them moves they haven’t done within reason. You are allowed to push the boundaries a little. There are some things that you must keep in mind though.

SOMETHING YOU THINK YOUR CHARACTER CAN DO ≠ SOMETHING THEY CAN ACTUALLY DO

This means you have to keep things realistic. Do I think Chris Jericho could do a deadlift powerbomb to someone? Possibly... but chances are he cannot with the type of body that he has. Do I think John Cena could dive over the top rope and dive onto someone? There's a chance... but he's never done it in his career so there has to be a reason for that. Do I think Natalya could do a hurricanrana off the top rope? I mean, I would not be surprised if she could... but she's never done that. Even if the game keeps trolling David and making her do that despite it not being in his moveset. Just because you think your character can do something doesn't mean they actually can. Just because two wrestlers have similar body types and one of them does amazing things doesn't mean another could.

SMALL CHARACTER ≠ HIGH FLYER

Let’s take Alexa Bliss as a prime example of what I mean by this. She’s smaller in size - both in height and weight. That means she must be a high flyer... right? WRONG. Alexa Bliss is small but she has never been a high flyer. Alexa has never done springboards and has never dived outside of the ring. The only thing she does is her Twisted Bliss and that's it.  She’s not a high flyer which means David is not allowed to give her some springboard moves UNLESS he buys them as a signature or a finisher. The same could also be said about Sasha Banks to an extent. Sure, she has done outside dives and is pretty fast. I can give her a shooting star press... right? NO. THAT IS NOT RIGHT. She’s more of a high flyer than Alexa Bliss has ever been but she’s not that kind of wrestler. Basically, I am trying to say just because your character is of smaller size doesn't mean you are allowed to add outside dives and springboard moves and mega flip moves.

"MY MOVESET IS BORING" ≠ YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ADD COOL MOVES YOUR CHARACTER HASN'T DONE

There should be two or three reasons why you choose to pick up a certain wrestler. One, their gimmick. Two, if they are going to be a CAW or will they be in-game. And three, does their moveset and the way they wrestle appeal to you. As stated, we have allowed people to become creative with their moves but there is a fine line which you cannot cross. Let’s use Randy Orton as an example. Outside of his finisher, I’m sure most of us would agree that Randy doesn’t have a bad moveset but it’s kind of bland compared to others. That’s the price you pay for choosing him though. He doesn’t really have many super exciting moves. He doesn’t dive outside the ring. He doesn’t really dive inside the ring much. This doesn’t mean you can add random moves to make things more exciting UNLESS it’s stuff he’s done or similar to what he’s done.

Adding onto that...

"MY MOVESET FEELS LIMITED" ≠ YOU CAN ADD CERTAIN ABILITIES TO CERTAIN CHARACTERS

Take powerhouses for example. Sure, there are some exceptions like Brock Lesnar and Sheamus who have dived off the top rope before and powerhouses like Harper have done plenty of suicide dives in their career... but most powerhouses are not going to be climbing the top rope or diving outside of the ring. These powerhouses include people like Nia Jax, Braun Strowman, and Rowan. There is no reason you should have the top rope dive ability on any of them. Perhaps an exception can be made if you want to add a splash, to say that your character wants to use their size to their advantage, but for the most part, we shouldn't see certain characters actively trying to do some top rope dives.

And lastly...

CONSIDER YOUR OPPONENTS WHEN ADDING CERTAIN MOVES

There have always been certain moves in the game that can be rather... I don't want to say they are bad but they are obnoxious. Maybe the move is just considered kind of cheap because it hits really fast (faster than normal moves) or it's a move that is just really obnoxious to go up against. I'm not going to be naming any moves in particular but I just think this is something that we need to keep in mind. We are all here to have fun and play matches away from the annoyances of online and it's not fun going up against certain moves in the game.

Basically, what I am trying to say is this... You cannot pick a character up and expect not to deal with the flaws of that character. If your character can't do springboard dives and outside dives than you need to accept this. If your character is not capable of diving off the top rope on an active basis then you need to accept this. If your character has a more bland moveset then you need to accept this. Creative Freedom means things still has to be realistic but you are allowed to explore things. If you play AJ Styles and you want to mix his current moveset with his moveset from his younger days then that is fine... and the same can be said if you play someone like Shawn Michaels. We only ask that you do not step past the line where it's too much. Some of us, certain admins included, have done that a lot this past game and we want to crack down on it some. Stuff like Cage/HIAC/Ladder abilities virtually most people haven't done so that's the only real "exception" that you're allowed to add despite it maybe not being "realistic." But If you see someone with a move that you feel is not right on the moveset of the character they play then talk to that person and let them know that you think this doesn't fit... or let us admins know if you do not feel comfortable with confrontation and we can look into it. We should all be cool enough with each other here to have civil discussions.

Really well said and I'm glad that you guys agreed to cover this issue. A huge part of why I love XWL is that we have a reasonable amount of freedom that satisfies our creativity as writers, gamers, and storytellers, without that unrealistic overkill that makes the characters themselves unrecognizable to their real world likenesses.

I also thought all of the examples you provided in each given section were a great addition and hopefully allowed any members who were struggling with understanding their limits to visualize these guidelines more properly. Part of the beauty of investing in a character is amping up the qualities that they already possess. This is XWL, not build-a-bear.

Makes sense, I agree with this and I will be adding some moves to Bryan and Strowman when the new game comes out as well - moves that they would do.
